Public Reference Service


The United Nations Archives and Records Management Section is committed to providing a quality service to all its clients. Our research room staff will offer professional advice on aspects of your research that are relevant to United Nations archives.

UN Archives in New York is available for consultation in the Archives and Records Management Section (ARMS) facilities in New York subject to public access regulations.

Members of the public may have access to:

  • Documents that were accessible at the time of their creation.

  • Documents which are more than 20 years old and not subject to restrictions imposed by the Secretary-General.

  • Documents which are less than 20 years old and not subject to restrictions imposed by the Secretary-General, on condition that the originating office has given written consent for access.

 

Sending a Reference Enquiry to UN Archives


  Staff is available to:
  • Discuss research interests
  • Provide information on relevant sources
  • Arrange an appointment for an on-site visit
  • Some suggestions for making a reference enquiry
Be as specific as possible about your topic. If your research concerns an individual include full name, previous name, dates, places, etc.
Be sure to mention sources already consulted.
Please mention any previous contact with staff members.

The Archives will provide information about sources relevant to your topic, but due to the number of requests we cannot undertake extensive research.
