Serge Wolff Photographs of the UN HQ building project
One of the many interesting items in the UN Archives is this series of records from Serge Wolff. The series consists of photo albums, newspaper clippings, building models plans relating to the planning of Headquarters site. The historical material was received from the estate of Mr. Serge M. Wolff who appears to have been a translator for the Russian architect, Mr. N.D. Bassov. Mr. Wolff eventually worked in the Headquarters Planning Office in Rockefeller Centre and compiled this personal and fascinating first-hand documentation of the beginnings of the United Nations and the early planning which led to the construction of the U.N. Headquarters complex in New York City.
We present here one of the albums from the series. Serge Wolff Photo Album. Note: to facilitate access we have low resolution images in the album. Should you wish to view higher resolution images please contact the UN Archives at arms@un.org
United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA)
A popular photograph collection at the UN Archives documents the work of the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA). Established by agreement of 44 nations on 9 November 1943, and continuing until 1946, UNRRA administered or arranged for the relief of World War II victims through the provision of basic necessities and services such as food, fuel, medical care, and vocational training.
The collection consists of 3,530 black and white photographs covering UNRRA activities in 28 countries across six continents. The UNRRA photographers, through the eyes of their subjects, capture both the devastation of war and the hope of reconstruction.
